From the Margins to the Mainstream: A Guide for Building Products and Strategies for Underbanked Markets


NCIF's Retail Financial Services Initiative invested in 12 banks and credit unions, helping them develop, test, and implement new products and strategies aimed at bringing the “unbanked” and “underbanked” into the financial mainstream. Peer learning was a core component of the initiative, so that participating institutions would share experiences and best practices. This guide brings together many of the lessons and insights that emerged, in the form of case studies and strategy briefs.  Taken as a whole, the guide offers other institutions the basic tools they need to develop the products and services that can reach the unbanked/underbanked at a scale that is both profitable for providers and beneficial to their customers.
